About the Five Squad Association
Five separate first aid squads throughout Middletown Township provide emergency
medical services to township residents. These squads (Fairview, Leonardo, Lincroft,
Middletown, and Port Monmouth) specifically serve their own respective areas for any
medical or rescue emergency. In the case where the local squad may not be available
for an emergency call, one of the other four squads will step in and respond. In
addition, there may be a call for service that requires more apparatus (ambulances,
rescue trucks, etc.) than a single squad can handle. In situations like these,
additional squads from the surrounding areas are dispatched to supplement the local
responders.
The five squads that provide EMS in Middletown are consistently working with each
other every day to provide emergency care to the residents of the township. Since the
squads work with each other often, the Five Squad Association was created to streamline
the administration and overall operability of the five squads together. The Five Squad
Association is comprised of members from each of the five squads.
Many township events (such as the EMS participation in Middletown Day, the annual
Rude Awakening demonstration that is put on for the High Schools, or the various parades)
are coordinated through the Five Squad Association. These are events that every squad
in Middletown attends. The Five Squad Association is also largely responsible for
applying for Federal, State, and County grants for expensive equipment such as
life-saving defibrillators or new ambulances. These grants supplement the donations
generated by each squad's annual fund drive.
The Five Squad Association also operates additional apparatus that can
be used to complement the vehicles owned by the individual squads. One such vehicle
is a spare ambulance, dedicated to the September 11th tragedy. This ambulance is
generally used to stand-in for an ambulance at one of the squads that may be temporarily
out of service for repairs. It can also be used for normal duty in the event that a
large-scale emergency requires a large number of transport apparatus. Other vehicles
are a recently-acquired school bus (that can transport a large number of "walking
wounded" patients in the event that it is needed) and an incident support unit with
equipment and extra supplies for a large-scale incident.
Below listed are the officers and apparatus that make up the Five Squad Association.
